From the decks of commercial fishing boats to the keys of a Steinway Grand Piano, Gary Christiansen’s journey is anything but ordinary. A 30-year commercial fisherman and former theater organist during the golden era of “Pizza and Pipes,” Gary did not truly discover the piano until his 30s. When he did, the floodgates opened. What poured out was not just music; it was experience, resilience, and a lifetime of stories translated into sound.
“An Evening with Gary Christiansen: 60,000 Knots to 60,000 Notes” is more than a concert. It is an improvisational voyage through genres, moods, and ideas. Gary plays conceptually, creating entire landscapes of sound in real time. He draws inspiration from jazz, blues, classical, rock, and even the rhythms of the sea he once fished. No two performances are ever the same. Each note is part of a living, breathing moment: an intimate conversation between artist and audience.
This performance is not scripted. Gary does not arrive with a set list or rehearse polished pieces. Instead, he steps into the space, feels the energy of the room, and lets the music emerge. His concerts are filled with surprise, delight, and deep emotional resonance. A single phrase of melody can carry the weight of an entire story. For some, it is hauntingly beautiful. For others, it is exhilaratingly unpredictable. For everyone in the room, it is unforgettable.
The Hartley Mansion, with its rich history and intimate setting, provides the perfect backdrop for this unique event. Listeners will experience world-class musicianship in a welcoming environment that feels more like a gathering of friends than a traditional concert hall. The evening offers music that is stripped of pretense and full of heart, creating a space where audience members are not only spectators but participants in the creative process as it unfolds in real time.
Gary’s music defies categories. One moment you may hear the echoes of a smoky jazz club, the next a surge of rock energy, followed by a tender classical passage that feels both centuries old and entirely new. He blends ideas and emotions into something that is uniquely his own: music that moves effortlessly between genres and always remains deeply human.
Whether you are a lifelong lover of live music, a fan of improvisation, or someone simply seeking an inspiring evening in Everett, this concert is for you. Come ready to listen, to feel, and to be surprised.
