Generous Portions | Collaborative Platters by Joe Max Emminger, Elizabeth Sandvig and Dick Weiss

If you live in the Pacific Northwest, you are no doubt familiar with the artworks of Joe Max Emminger, Elizabeth Sandvig, and Dick Weiss. Their works are instantly recognizable and prolific within the landscape of Seattle. Recently, these three artists - each one a recognized master and beloved for their unique style - have been convening weekly to paint together collaboratively. Every Wednesday morning, Dick, Joe, and Elizabeth gather on Sandvig's sun porch. They each pull up a chair at a small table covered with newsprint, brushes, and a plethora of enamels and set about painting on large white ceramic plates. Part coffee klatch, part group critique, their painting sessions are a riot of laughter, gossip, reminiscing, and sheer joy. Building off one another's imagery and often drawing inspiration from their spirited dialog, their painted ceramics are diary-like and spontaneous. Some plates are filled with color and figures, while others are more restrained in pallette, but no matter the approach, each of their styles is instantly recognizable. Elizabeth's soft figures, Joe's black silhouettes, and Dick's text and patterns work together to create a curious narrative that can't help but make you beam. We are thrilled to invite you to the opening of this extraordinary and utterly unique exhibition. Please join us on Thursday, March 7th, from 5–8 pm as we gather to celebrate with Elizabeth, Joe, and Dick. Seattle-based painter and printmaker Elizabeth Sandvig creates expressive artworks inspired by dreams and imagination. In her own words, "I am always looking for some mysterious in-between place where ideas and images come together to show me a new exciting path to follow." Sandvig received a Bachelor of Arts from Pomona College in California and her Master of Arts from Radcliffe College, Harvard University in Massachusetts. She received the 2007 Twining Humber Award for lifetime artistic achievement. Born and raised in Seattle, Joe Max Emminger dropped out of high school and joined the army. Later realizing the importance of education, he finished his high school diploma and eventually enrolled at the University of Washington, receiving a BA in Communication in 1973. While a part-time student, Emminger discovered art and taught himself through reading at the UW art library. Painting became a central part of his life, and Emminger has painted every day ever since. Dick Weiss was born in Everett, Washington, and earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Yale University. He began teaching at Pilchuck Glass School in 1982 and has completed commissions for the Bellevue Art Museum, Washington, the Port of Shanghai, Shanghai, China, the Seattle Tacoma International Airport, Washington, and the University of Washington, Seattle. His work can be found in impressive collections around the world, including the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the Corning Museum of Glass in New York. This show will be on view from March 7 through March 30th.
