ACE – ONLINE: The Great American Songbook
In the 1920’s, ‘30’s, ‘40’s, and ‘50’s, three cultural strands came together to produce the most amazing outpouring of songs in history. From New Orleans came Jazz and all its descendants, from New York came the invention of Musical Theater, from California came the “Talkies” that eventually churned out hundreds of Hollywood musicals. From bars and dance halls, to stage and Vaudeville, to Tin Pan Alley, to recordings, radio, Juke Box, came all that has followed. Even if you don’t think you know them, you know them—the composers: Irving Berlin, George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Kern and Hammerstein, Rodgers and Hart, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Lerner and Loewe, Duke Ellington, Fats Waller; the performers: Nelson Eddie and Jeanette MacDonald, Fred and Ginger, Judy Garland, Ella Fitzgerald, and so many more. Hundreds of songs from this “Golden Age” have lived on to be called The Great American Songbook. Come hear about and listen to this wonderful music with its clever, witty, meaningful lyrics.
