The opening concert on the festival’s main stage features two internationally renowned artists performing with their own bands. Terell Stafford returns as the Sarasota Jazz Festival’s Artistic Director. In addition, he is performing with his own quintet in the opening concert on the main stage. An acclaimed trumpet player based in New York, he has been hailed as “one of the great players of our time, a fabulous trumpet player” by piano legend McCoy Tyner. Since the mid-1990’s, Stafford has performed with groups such as Benny Golson’s Sextet, McCoy Tyner’s Sextet, Kenny Barron Quintet, Frank Wess Quintet, Jimmy Heath Quintet and Big Band, Jon Faddis Jazz Orchestra, Carnegie Hall Jazz Band and Dizzy Gillespie All-Star Alumni Band.
Renowned in the jazz world as an educator, performer and leader he has received countless award nominations and accolades, including several GRAMMY nominations and a GRAMMY win for the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, Monday Night Live at the Village Vanguard. Stafford is the Director of Jazz Studies and Chair of Instrumental Studies at Temple University and Managing and Artistic Director of the Jazz Orchestra of Philadelphia.
The headliner for opening night on the Main Stage is Dee Dee Bridgewater and her Quartet. The winner of three Grammy Awards, a Tony Award, an AUDELCO Award, an NEA Jazz Master and several other distinct honors from around the globe, Dee Dee Bridgewater is one of America’s most celebrated living performers and one of the greatest vocalists in modern jazz history. Bridgewater’s career has always bridged musical genres. She earned her first professional experience as a member of the legendary Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Big Band, and throughout the 70’s she performed with such jazz notables as Max Roach, Sonny Rollins, Dexter Gordon and Dizzy Gillespie. After a foray into the pop world during the 1980s, she relocated to Paris and began to turn her attention back to Jazz. “I am a jazz singer, that’s in my blood. I thought an art form was dying and chose to dedicate myself to it.”— Dee Dee Bridgewater.
Bridgewater also pursued a parallel career in musical theater, winning a Tony Award for her role as Glinda in The Wiz in 1975. Other theatrical credits include the lead role of Billie Holiday in the off-Broadway production of Lady Day, Sophisticated Ladies, Black Ballad, Carmen, and Cabaret.
