Beat reporters cover a particular issue, sector, organization, or institution over time.
Learn from favorite local journalists how they identify key issues and sources for their beats, get background information to give stories context, and develop resources to focus coverage. They will also discuss the ways in which they use (or don’t use) social media and crowdsourcing as a reporting tool.
Tom Bayles is WGCU’s senior environmental reporter and a 35-year veteran journalist in Florida. Bayles has been nominated four times for a Pulitzer Prize.
Samantha Gholar is the award-winning social justice reporter for USA Today network. She is based at the Sarasota Herald-Tribune.
Steven Walker, a graduate of the University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications, is the education reporter for the Sarasota Herald-Tribune.
Facilitator: Kathleen Murray, a graduate of the Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University, worked for more than a decade reporting, writing and editing for all size media outlets ranging from a twice-weekly community newspaper to the website of a 24-hour cable news network. Her most relevant “beat” assignment was visual arts reporter for the Poughkeepsie Journal. Murray is currently the communications director for WSLR+Fogartyville and host of “ArtBeat” on WSLR.
