All-American Women’s Baseball Classic

The Second Annual All-American Women’s Baseball Classic Tournament will be held Friday to Sunday, Nov. 17-19, 2023 at Ed Smith Stadium in Sarasota. Come out and watch the top women’s baseball players from across the nation as they showcase their skills, athleticism, and determination in a series of thrilling games. On Friday, there will be two games. At 3 p.m., the Rockford Peaches face the Kenosha Comets, followed at 6 p.m. by a game between the South Bend Blue Sox and the Racine Belles. On Saturday at 10 a.m., the Peaches play the Blue Sox. And at 1 p.m., it’s the Comets versus the Belles. On Sunday, games will be at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. On Monday, Nov. 20 from 9:30-noon, the American Girls Baseball Clinic will be held, also at Ed Smith Stadium. This free skills clinic, conducted by tournament players, is open to girls up to 16 years old. Sue Zipay is a 89-year-old Englewood resident, who was a pitcher, utility infielder and outfielder for two years for the Rockford Peaches of the All-American Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL). She is also the Founder and President of American Girls Baseball, which develops, manages, and promotes training and instructional programs for girls and women in the game of baseball. “I love this game,” Zipay said. “Our goal is to get the public out to see just how talented these players are and to jump start the process of establishing a professional women’s baseball league – a true league of their own.” Those who attend the All-American Women’s Baseball Classic will not just enjoy a phenomenal sporting event – they will support the advancement of women in baseball, promoting inclusivity, gender equality, and the growth of a sport we all love. A bit of history … In 1943, the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League was founded by Philip K. Wrigley. More than 600 women played in the league, which eventually consisted of 10 teams located in the American Midwest. In 1948, league attendance peaked at more than 900,000 spectators. The most successful team, the Rockford Peaches, won a league-best four championships. The league was made famous in the 1992 movie “A League of Their Own,” a fictionalized account of the early days of the league and its stars. The movie starred Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, Rosie O’Donnell and Madonna. American Girls Baseball (AGB) was created as an affiliate organization of the All-American Girl’s Professional Baseball League Players Association in 2019 to continue the legacy of this famous women’s professional league. Today, American Girls Baseball is a baseball league for girls and women who want to have a choice between softball and baseball, that provides them with opportunities to train, participate and compete in the game of baseball at every level, including high school, college, and professional.
