ACE - The History of Pinecraft: A Sarasota Amish Community
This class will explore the history of Pinecraft - the Sarasota community that has been a popular winter destination for the Amish for nearly 100 years. What brought the Amish to Sarasota in the early 1920’s, and why did Pinecraft become the community where most of them settled? How did Pinecraft evolve from primarily an enclave separated from the rest of Sarasota, to a destination for many people who are not Amish, who come for the food and visit the community. The final class will include a brief tour of Pinecraft and lunch or dessert at Der Dutchman. This class will provide limited information on what the Amish believe. For persons interested in that topic, several specific classes are offered from time to time – “Mennonites, Amish, and the Pinecraft Community,” and “Amish Customs and Practices.”
