In six sessions you will experience an overview of the 400-year history of opera, an art form beloved by many, but often misunderstood. We will move from its beginnings in 17th century Italy to modern and relevant operas like Blue, The Hours, and X. You will experience extraordinary music, scenery, costumes, larger than larger-than-life performers, with some plots based in real history and others in complete fantasy. Enjoy the excitement, the love, the hate, the wars, the romances, the jealousies, the madness, the murder and mayhem, and the laughter, from Jacopo Peri’s Euridice in 1600 and Purcell’s first opera in English (Dido and Aeneas) in 1689, to popular operas in various languages by Mozart, Verdi, Bizet, Wagner, Puccini, and more. Join us for a romp through this astonishing and wide-ranging art form that in its long history has incorporated all art forms—vocal and instrumental music at their most difficult and challenging, dance, architecture, literature, playwriting, and the visual arts.
