ACE - Sea to Shining Sea: America's Empire of Liberty
This course will cover the westward expansion of the United States. We will examine the political,economic,racial,and religious roots of America's westward growth to the Pacific coast. By the mid 19th century America had increased by 800 million acres. This course will look at the historical events that played a major role in that westward expansion, particularly the period following the War of 1812, the Louisiana Purchase of 1803, the Mexican War, the near genocide and forced relocation of Native Americans, the cultural and intellectual forces such as the concept of Manifest Destiny, as well as the discovery of valuable natural resources such as gold and silver. The course will show how the exploration and settlement of the West was often guided and planned by the federal government to support national goals for the new lands and resources of the West.
