“LuvFlora” by Deborah Shea

Viewpoints Gallery is thrilled to present our November exhibition “LuvFlora” by Bay Area artist Deborah Shea. This breathtaking new collection of pastel works was inspired by Deborah’s love of flowers and the undiluted joy that they bring into our lives. Deborah’s large works vibrate with personality and effervescence, highlighting her reverence for her floral subjects and her incredible attention to detail. She works in dry pastels on sanded board, deftly transforming pure pigments of pastel powder into beautiful, vivid floral portraits. Her stunning finished works capture the inherent beauty of her subjects, including subtle shifts in light and color, the soft texture of each petal and distinct patterns unique to each flower she paints. This impressive collection transports viewers into a vibrant, blooming garden and invites them to see flowers in an entirely new way. “I am inspired by the natural world,” says Deborah, “I love to capture all the beauty in florals, exploring the abstract shapes, finding the path of light, creating transparency and building the luminous color of the flower centers and petals. Pastels have been my favorite medium since I was very young. Their wonderful, vibrant colors are my joy to share with others.” Deborah Shea was born and raised in San Francisco. At the age of 14, she attended a summer arts program with Ruth Asawa and created images for the Hyatt Fountain and UCSF. Deborah received a BA in Studio Art & Design at UC Davis, where she studied with Wayne Thiebaud and Roland Peterson. She had a career for over 20 years as a creative director, designer, and illustrator before becoming a full-time fine artist in 2017. She has won numerous awards in juried and solo exhibitions, and has taught pastel classes at Filoli, the Pacific Art League, the Atherton Art League, and in her studio at Art Bias in San Carlos. Deborah also teaches pastel workshops for the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe, New Mexico. In 2023, she was selected as one of seven San Mateo County artists for a yearlong exhibition in the Chan Zuckerberg Community Center in Redwood City. Deborah is pursuing her MFA at the Academy of Art in San Francisco. She currently resides in Redwood City.
