“Colorscapes” oil paintings by Karen White

Viewpoints Gallery celebrates vibrant colors and modern designs in our October exhibition “Colorscapes” by award winning artist Karen White. Karen’s newest collection features quintessential Bay Area landscapes depicted in her masterful modern style featuring lush colors and bold shapes. Karen’s love of California is evident in this stunning collection, which features scenes from northern California’s sun-kissed golden hills, autumn’s aspens and russet vines, and colorful summertime wildflowers accenting Bay Area open space trails. Emerald farm rows create colorful modern interpretations of San Benito and Central Valley growing fields. Presented in Karen’s stunning and unique style, familiar Bay Area landscapes become elegant modern masterpieces. Karen paints in layers to create a dynamic color story. She first uses a transparent russet-red to tone the canvas and create her composition. After her initial layer dries, Karen uses big brushes, palette knives, squeegees and thicker paint to layer new colors on top of the underpainting. In her finished pieces, Karen allows pops of her bright red underpainting to show through, which infuses each painting with exciting color surprises across the canvas. Karen’s background reveals a surprising pathway to art! After graduating from University of Southern California, Karen began her career working in fast-paced high-tech marketing, followed by a transition to working as a certified court reporter in the Santa Clara County court system. Finally, she arrived at a decade-long career providing administrative work in a firm of civil litigators. All along the way –since her first oil painting class when was ten years old – Karen pursued her love of art by taking classes in a range of mediums on weekends and evenings. She has studied drawing and oil painting, and has taken focused workshops in papermaking, watercolor, oil and cold wax, ceramics, mosaic and formal portraiture. Karen now works as a full time artist and, for the past ten years, she has worked primarily in oils, her favorite medium for its rich texture and brilliant color saturation. Modern design and vibrant colors are hallmarks of her work, as evidenced in her latest “Colorscapes” collection. Karen’s dedication to art throughout her life is apparent in her mastery of color and her deft economy of brushstrokes.
