Three seasoned musicians raise up their voices as an offering to their community. This music is the result of four years of weekly gatherings where they would drink coffee, share life stories, and bring in songs, working out instrumental arrangements and vocal harmonies to illuminate the mood of each piece. The majority of the compositions are from originals, writing from the heart and to the heart. Sprinkled in among the originals are pieces that they have long loved, placed in a new context.
“There’s nothing more fun than singing harmony with friends,” says bassist Rick Chelew. From Peter, Paul and Mary to the Byrds, Crosby, Stills and Nash, Ladysmith Black Mambazo and Gospel church music, all three members have been infatuated and uplifted by the sound of voices blending together in harmony for their entire lives. “Now it’s our turn to raise our voices and give back to the community.” Accompanying the vocals (and sometimes standing on their own) are Kimball Hurd’s exquisite acoustic guitar and mandolin work, Rick Chelew’s well-seasoned double bass and guitar, and Lee Garland’s colorful keyboard playing.
In the 1980s, Lee Garland graced iconic Hollywood venues like the Troubadour and Whisky A Go Go. He frequently performed at the Esalen Institute with the band North Star and has served as both director and educator for the Breakthrough Men’s Community.
Rick Chelew has produced records in Los Angeles and London, collaborating with artists like Dave Van Ronk, Pentangle, Bert Jansch, and T Bone Burnett. He has also played with groups such as The Cachagua Playboys, Andrea’s Fault, Heartstrings, and the Cuneo Jazz Band, showcasing his exceptional bass playing and musicianship.
Kimball Hurd has performed from Martha’s Vineyard to the California Coast, enchanting audiences for decades with his unique tenor voice, exquisite finger-picking, and deeply moving songs. He played with the seminal folk and Americana trio, City Folk. Keith Greeninger and Roger Feuer, two multi-talented Bay Area musicians, would join Kimball in creating some of the scene’s most soul-stirring three-part harmonies and intricate musical arrangements heard anywhere.
