Third Coast Percussion Featuring JLin and Jay Afrisando
Part of the April in Santa Cruz Creative Music and Arts Festival 2024
FREE and Open to the Public
UCSC Music Center Recital Hall on the UCSC Campus
Third Coast Percussion are celebrated purveyors of contemporary and experimental music, whose distinct mission powerfully broadens audiences' conceptions of art and music. For the past four years they have been developing intensive efforts to focus on African, Latinx, Asian, Arab, and Native American musicians, and are notable in their long-term commitment to gender diversity. These commitments have yielded dozens of new commissions and record releases, making them one of the most productive and ground-breaking collaborative groups for truly new creative music. Jay Afrisando is an Indonesian composer, multimedia artist, researcher, and educator. He works on aural diversity, acoustic ecology, and cultural identity, focusing on disability and environmental justice, arts and accessibility, and decolonizing arts practices. He shares vital experiences and disseminates knowledge through multisensory and antidisciplinary practices, including video, text, spatial audio, fixed media, improvisation, and various collaborative methods. The thrilling, emotional, and multidimensional works of JLin (Jerrilynn Patton) have earned her a rank as “one of the most forward-thinking contemporary composers in any genre” (Pitchfork). Her signature sound builds on a ‘Chicago footwork style’; her diverse influences, ranging from Igor Stravinsky and Philip Glass to Miles Davis and Eartha Kitt give Jlin’s complex percussion-driven work a sophisticated polyrhythmic sound all its own.
