FREE and Open to the Public – All Ages Welcome
Audiences of all ages are invited to two free matinees of Gian Carlo Menotti’s Amahl and the Night Visitors, one of the most frequently performed operas in the repertoire. The first-ever opera written for television, it premiered live on NBC December 24, 1951.
Amahl and the Night Visitors has been performed on every continent and in many languages, and has been seen by more people than any other opera in history. The story, told in 50 minutes, tells of the night that three kings, following an unusual star, stop for shelter at the home of Amahl, a poor shepherd boy who lives with his widowed mother.
Menotti's beautiful score will be played and sung by UC Santa Cruz opera students and instrumentalists with special guests Jennifer Cass (harp), Ron Miller (clarinet) and others appearing in the chamber orchestra. The shepherd’s chorus will be sung by the University Concert Choir.
Nathaniel Berman conducts, Sheila Willey directs.
