Are you ready to get your poetry on? Join us on Feb 20, 2024 at Satori Arts for ‘Inter|Act,’ a FREE spoken word open mic night, from 7-9 pm, with featured poet Roxi Power as she presents a ‘Neo Benshi’ performance. Roxi Power is a poet, performer, and publisher whose book, The Songs That Objects Would Sing was published Fall 2023. Power is a member of The Hive Poetry Collective. She founded and edits the trans-genre anthology series, Viz. Inter-Arts at the University of California, Santa Cruz where she teaches.
What’s ‘Neo Benshi,’ you ask? Roxi explains, “During the silent film era in Japan and Korea, the benshi, or film-teller, stood to the side of the screen and narrated the film’s plot. There were tens of thousands of benshis, more powerful and popular than actors or directors, each with their own style–from the documentary to the theatrical. In my “Neo-Benshi,” I ventriloquize, matching my new words to the screen actors’ lip movements, to create an alternative storyline and a kind of spoken “musical score” to the films that relies on synchronicity and voice work in the tradition of Mel Blanc.”
Don't forget to sign up to share your poetry with the community, or come out to support our local poets! Sign up at www.maginei.com/openmic, or at onsite starting at 6:30 pm.
1st and 3rd Tuesdays.
