Menlo Park Storytelling Festival: Olga Loya - Día de Muertos

The 8th Annual Menlo Park Storytelling Festival continues with a performance by the magical, much-loved teller, Olga Loya! Best for Ages 11-Adult. Listen to the story that shares the history of the “Day of the Dead” along with family stories, myths, folk tales and legends. Join in the discovery of the power of ceremony, and an opportunity to look at life and death in a more personal way. Renowned storyteller Olga Loya explores the history of the Día de Muertos tradition, shares playful stories and folktales, and ends with a moving personal story about her own mother’s death and the altar Olga’s family created. Olga's tales share the sad, scary, funny and ridiculous sides of life and death. Program content is suitable for ages 11 to Adult. About Olga Loya Olga Loya, a Latina storyteller, performance artist, writer and teacher, uses a mix of Spanish and English to share traditional tales from Latin America, as well as stories from her own varied and colorful life growing up in East Los Angeles. Olga uses her voice, body, and sometimes music and dance, to draw her audience into the imaginative and surprising worlds of the tales she tells. She performs and teaches workshops at schools, businesses, museums, and festivals across the U.S. and beyond. Olga is a recipient of the National Storytelling Network Oracle Award, a circle of excellence award. About Storytelling Storytelling is telling stories--without using a book. It's an ancient art form that predates libraries, and books, and writing. It's not necessarily for children! Traditional-style storytelling creates unique images in the mind of each listener. According to the National Storytelling Network, "storytelling is the interactive art of using words and actions to reveal the elements and images of a story while encouraging the listener’s imagination. In storytelling, the listener imagines the story.” Olga Loya's performance is one of five events in the 8th Annual Menlo Park Storytelling Festival, taking place from October 17 - November 17.
