Songs Our Mothers Taught Us features exquisite music from Dvorak ( his song cycle: Songs My Mother Taught Me), Beethoven (the ‘Spring’ Sonata for violin and piano), piano solos by African American Betty Jackson King (Spring Intermezzo), and by the celebrated Ethiopian nun, Emahoy Maryam Tsegué -Guèbrou (with an introduction by David Anthony III) music from two Grammy-nominated composers: African American composer Carlos Oliver Simon, Jr. and Paul T Sanchéz, and a Grammy Awarded composer, Eric Whitacre; poems by Lyla June, Joy Harjo, and Santa Cruz’ own past poet laureate, Danusha Lameris.
Musical Soulmates Performers Collaborative artists include Shannon D’Antonio, Violin, Lori Schulman, Soprano; Etienne Franc, Bass; Sarah Cruse, spoken word; Guest speaker David Anthony III, and Kate Saphir Alm, piano and Musical Soulmates Artistic Director. Poetry by Danusha Lameris, Santa Cruz’ past Poet Laureate, and artwork on the theme of motherhood by Abi Mustaffa. In the singularly warm and vibrant atmosphere of Mariposa Cafe, with food, coffees and special Soulmates mocktails for the occasion.
