Valuing Nature in Personal Practice and Societal Transformation

Innovations using new forms of science and technology to support our natural world are being applied in 185 nations by more than 300 partners worldwide. They demonstrate the value of nature as an engine of well-being and prosperity and of the risks and devastating costs of its loss. Join the Commonwealth Club World Affairs Peninsula Chapter and the Los Altos Library as Professor Gretchen Daily discusses key frontiers in understanding human dependence on nature for nutrition, health, climate and economic security, and more. Professor Daily will describe the importance of climate solutions that are based on our understanding of our dependence on nature, from material basics to the more holistic concepts of belonging, beauty, and spirit. She will argue that being able to access and action this understanding is crucial when it comes to making the necessary transformations in society and in taking the decisions required to secure the biosphere and our human future. Professor Gretchen C. Daily is the Bing Professor of Environmental Science in the Department of Biology at Stanford University, the Director of the Center for Conservation Biology at Stanford, and a senior fellow at the Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment. She is co-founder and Faculty Director of the Stanford Natural Capital Project (NatCap), a global partnership whose goal is to integrate the values of nature into planning, policy, finance, and management. * This program is free and pre-registration is not required.
