The Law of War and the Israel-Hamas Conflict
On October 7, Hamas carried out a murderous attack against civilians in Israel. Israel has responded with extensive air strikes and a ground invasion that has resulted in widespread destruction and tens of thousands of casualties in the Gaza Strip. Both sides have been accused of violating the rules governing the conduct of war and committing war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide.
Join the Commonwealth Club World Affairs Peninsula Chapter and the Los Altos Library as Professor Weiner discusses the relevant law of armed conflict (or “international humanitarian law”) and when violations amount to war crimes or other serious violations of international humanitarian law in the context of the war in Gaza.
Allen Weiner is Director of the Stanford Program in International and Comparative Law; Director of the Stanford Humanitarian Program, and Director of the Stanford Center on International Conflict and Negotiation. His research and teaching focus primarily on the fields of international security and international conflict resolution.
* This program is free and pre-registration is not required. However, the maximum capacity is 100, so arrive early to ensure a seat. Doors open at 6:30 PM and the program runs from 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM. If you have symptoms of illness (coughing, fever, etc.), we ask that you either stay home or wear a mask.
