From Tiny Seed to Global Change: How Small Beginnings Make a Better World
How did a little "Purple Library" in the Moroccan desert turn into a movement across countries? Please join us as we end our spring series in Los Altos on a positive note, celebrating what we can achieve when we work together.
Barb Mackraz will talk about how Oliveseed, a small nonprofit in Palo Alto, grew from that first library to a grassroots initiative in rural Kenya and Morocco transforming thousands of lives. The organization has blossomed to dozens of library and literacy projects in disadvantaged settings; runs a Women's Work Center with Maasai women earning an income for the first time in their lives; and develops safe water facilities, addressing the greatest daily challenge many families face. With individual stories, especially from youth, Ms. Mackraz will discuss how even small changes well-placed can make deep, lasting impact.
We need to build bridges in our world, and that is part of the message to share. You'll also learn about Palo Alto's new Friendship City in Kenya.
Barb Mackraz is founder and executive director of Oliveseed Foundation in the U.S. and co-founder of the grassroots nonprofit Oliveseed Kenya Trust, with an all-Maasai team. She a longtime member of Palo Alto's Neighbors Abroad and a lifelong advocate for literacy, environmental stewardship, and cross-world friendship. She serves as co-VP of their Friendship City program with Narok, Kenya, the capital city in the wildlife-rich region of the Maasai Mara.
