Building Resilient Inter-Ethnic Peace: Lessons from Historical Political Economics

Nations today must build communities that are not only able to peacefully accommodate increasing ethnic diversity, but that can also leverage its potential benefits. This remains critically important in societies that have been diverse historically; even the United States finds itself struggling to heal deep inter-ethnic divisions among its citizens that threaten domestic tranquility. And now, with the huge increase in global migration, it is even more challenging for nations and communities with less experience navigating a diverse setting. The challenge of building resilient inter-ethnic peace, while modern, is also very old. Join the Commonwealth Club World Affairs Peninsula Chapter and the Los Altos Library as Professor Saumitra Jha offers insights from communities around the world who have addressed this challenge, with varying degrees of success, for centuries. Saumitra Jha is an Associate Professor of Political Economy at the Stanford Graduate School of Business and Senior Fellow at the Center for Democracy, Development and the Rule of Law in the Freeman-Spogli Institute for International Affairs (FSI). * This program is free and pre-registration is not required. However, the maximum capacity is 100, so arrive early to ensure a seat. Doors open at 6:30 PM and the program runs from 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM. Face coverings are strongly recommended while inside.
