Artist's Reception at Los Altos Hills Town Hall

Deceptive Beauty The experimental photography exhibit Deceptive Beauty presented by local artist Dotti Cichon will be on display at the Los Altos Hills Town Hall from September 2024 to March 2025. The exhibit represents the essence of Dotti Cichon’s work, spanning over the past 20 years. Born in a New Jersey suburb of New York City, Dotti Cichon received a Kodak Brownie camera at age 5 and by age 6 she was winning contests. Together with her training in science and architecture, as well as in art and photography in the Design Department at University of California at Berkeley, Dotti Cichon has been an artist virtually all her life. The artist’s work is an exploration of the medium of photography, environmental issues, and us, as spiritual beings. Her photos are meant to touch the human psyche and evoke emotional response, sometimes subliminally. As a photographer, she attempts to keep expanding the limits of the medium by innovating and experimenting with new techniques and new ways to incorporate photography into our daily lives. Her works on silk, which are interpretations of actual places transformed by unique perspectives and reflections, can be exhibited as art on walls, draped from ceilings, or worn as scarves. Because of her background, much of her work and activism is about historic preservation and environmental issues. She finds new and unique ways to combine photography with other media to appeal to a wider range of viewers. She believes that she can inform and educate about environmental issues confronting man today by using pictures of deceptive beauty to present compelling images that draw people in, to look more closely and learn more. This exhibit gathers under the same roof subject matters that sit closest to the artist’s heart: the loss of trees due to deforestation or wildfires, posing danger to innumerable species of flora and fauna that may become extinct and ultimately endanger human life on Earth; insects in general, and butterflies and moths in particular, beautiful wonders of nature whose very existence is threatened by urban development; the issue of historic preservation of culturally significant buildings doomed by authorities to be demolished, only to be saved by the wish of the people. The exhibit is also meant to question pre-conceived notions of what we perceive as real or imaginary, maybe as a reality out there that we can’t comprehend because of our limited senses. Dotti Cichon exhibits extensively nationally and internationally, and her works are collected all over the world.
