Dorado Schmitt & Sons with the Django Festival All-Stars
The Django Festival All-Stars honor the music of the great gypsy jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt, considered one of the greatest guitar players of all time and the first European musician to make major contributions to the development of jazz guitar. The All-Stars honor the traditions of French gypsy jazz, adding their own creative interpretations, arrangements, and original compositions, all featuring a stunning virtuosity and musicality. Led by legendary guitarist Dorado Schmitt, the All-Stars now also feature Dorado’s sons, Samson and Amati, on lead guitar.
A bit of research on gypsy jazz and you’ll quickly find that this blend of American hot jazz and French chanson nearly always comes back to Reinhardt and trailblazing violinist Stephane Grappeli. Many of Reinhardt’s most beloved compositions, such as “Nuages” and “Minor Swing” have transcended genres and have become recognizable standards over time. The All-Stars’ approach builds off Reinhardt’s signature style while incorporating other influences such as bossa nova, flamenco, and contemporary jazz.
Blending hard-swinging rhythms, memorable melodies and intricate harmonies, this ensemble is a testament to how gypsy jazz continues to evolve with the times, yet harkens back to the legendary architects of the style.
