Foothill College STEM Center Funding Cut Meeting
Future plans for the STEM Center will be presented by Mark Barnes at tomorrow's MIP-C meeting. 1pm-3pm in room 1901 (admin conference room). The STEM Center topic is scheduled to come up at 2pm. Our campus administration would like to see us discontinue faculty tutoring in the STEM Center and
WLC.One argument for peer tutoring is budget, and the fact that faculty tutoring, when funded from 1320, displaces class sections. This is true, however Foothill spends less than 1.5% of the instructional budget on faculty tutoring. And a dollar is a dollar…1320 funds could be increased to accommodate this activity, or faculty tutoring could have its own budget line item and thus remove this discussion forever. Another argument is that other colleges do not offer faculty tutoring. This is also true. But we are often touted as the best community college in California, or the best in the nation. The best does not become the best by emulating those below them. Please come to attend this meeting and raise awareness by telling other students about this issue.
