Cabrillo Gallery is excited to present Tessie Barrera-Scharaga: Emotional Alchemy as the third of our LatinXperiencia series of exhibitions. In her mixed-media installations and assemblages, Barrera-Scharaga tells human stories of transformation and transcendence. Often using poetry as inspiration, the artist works in a symbolic realm in which both the conscious and unconscious minds come to play. At the same time, she explores the connections and tensions between individual perspectives and broader social, political and cultural realities. Reflecting psychological states, the work is at times painful, at times joyful and always viscerally attached to the realities of contemporary life.
Cabrillo Gallery’s LatinXperiencia series, which features LatinX artists, offers a platform to foster cross-cultural connections and generate meaningful conversations within our diverse academic community and beyond.
