Cabrillo Gallery Exhibition, Priyanka Rana: Inner Life

Through her work in this exhibition, Priyanka Rana delves into the unspoken stories that shape our complex internal landscapes, reflecting on memory, destiny, resilience, healing and transformation. Rana roots her artistic practice in ecology and sustainability, working with local, naturally felled tree trunks as the starting point for her abstract sculptures. Also central in her work is the interplay between that which is dangerous and delicate. There is an intense physicality in the ways the artist transforms raw wood, carving into it with chainsaws and handsaws, and often charring the surface of the completed forms with a torch. In contrast, many of Rana’s works are completed in the social space of her home dinner table, where she creates additional elements from domestic and intimate materials, such as fabric from saris or bluejeans. In her Memories are the Antidotes series, Rana uses fabrics to create ‘memory pods’ that are embedded into organic wood forms, embodying the powerful desire to protect and preserve memories. In the Destiny series, Rana exposes termite infestations in segments of trees, drawing out the paths of the wood’s destiny. Each path is then marked with nodes that obliquely reference a janam patri (Vedic astrological chart). Rana’s third series, Healing, was informed by the process of recovery, of the body becoming whole and well again. The wood is charred, its surface symbolizing resilience and the transformative power of healing. Priyanka Rana: Inner Life will be on view from Monday, January 29 through Friday, March 1, 2024.
