In Celebration of the Muse


The Hive Poetry Collective is pleased to announce it will assume production of the annual literary event, In Celebration of the Muse. Eighteen poets will be selected to read their work for an in-person reading on Friday, April 26, 6:30 p.m. at the Cabrillo College HORT Building 5005 for a two-hour program. All women, women identified, and non-binary poets are encouraged to apply. Submitting poets also have the option to include audio and visual as part of their reading. Poets must be available to read in person on April 26. In Celebration of The Muse has a 43-year history. Begun in 1981 by locals Patrice Vecchione and Gael Roziere at the prompting of Wilma Marcus, with organizational help over the years from Wilma Marcus Chandler, Amber Coverdale Sumrall, Diane Grunes, Donna Zavada,and Dena Taylor, In Celebration of the Muse has featured several well-known writers including Adrienne Rich, Lucille Clifton, bell hooks, Ellen Bass, Gabriella Gutiérrez, Tillie Olsen, and Ekua Omosupe, among many others. While past events have presented all genres of writing, this year’s event will focus on poetry. Deadline to apply is Feb. 16, 11:59 p.m. Readers will be notified on March 15 with public announcement of readers on March 22. There is no fee to apply but applicants will be asked to submit three poems as well as a statement about their work as a poet and why they would like to participate.
