The Concertino Strings, a 25-member string chamber orchestra with players from all over Santa Cruz County, will perform at 4 p.m. Saturday, March 4, and 11:30 am Wednesday, March 8, at the historic Boulder Creek United Methodist Church. Directors are Joanne Tanner and Renata Bratt, with guest conductor Martin Gaskell.
The program includes Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 by J.S. Bach; Pi Acres Suite, Opus 3.14159: The Builders, Dance, and To the Stars, by Martin Gaskell, an astronomer on the faculty of UCSC as well as an active composer and musician. The performance of To the Stars will include 'lights out' and a projection of stars and planets from the telescopes of a large observatory; Danzas de Panama: Punto and and Cumbia y Congo by William Grant Still, notable 20th-century African American composer based on Panamanian folk dances that originated in Africa.
Concerts are about 40 minutes long, casual dress, and free admission, donations accepted.
