Corn, Beans & Squash: Cooking with the Three Sisters at Pie Ranch

This is an opportunity to visit the farm at the height of harvest session, learn about these important crops, and cook delicious dishes in the outdoor kitchen with talented, local chefs. Throughout the day, we will discuss and explore the origins, farming practices, and culinary preparation of the three sisters: corn, beans, squash. Why are corn, beans and squash called the Three Sisters? The Iroquois and the Cherokee called these crops the three sisters' because they nurture each other like family when planted together. These indigenous agriculturalists placed corn in small hills planting beans around them and interspersing squash throughout the field. Beans naturally absorb nitrogen from the air and convert it to nitrates, fertilizing the soil for the corn and squash. In return, they are supported by winding around the corn stalks. The squash leaves provide ground cover between the corn and beans, preventing weeds from taking over the field. These three plants thrive together better than when they are planted alone. At this workshop, you can plan to: Craft corn tortillas from scratch Cook heirloom dry beans & learn about their cultivation Prepare a delicious dish using heirloom winter squash straight from the field The culmination of the program will be a lunch featuring all three sisters for a farm to table experience. We will also have child-centered activities so the whole family can celebrate autumn on the farm!
