Celebrating + Reclaiming Vietnamese Cultural Power with Viet Thanh Nguyen


WELCOME DVAN is excited to host Pulitzer-Prize winning author, Viet Thanh Nguyen, at San Jose's City Hall Rotunda to discuss his new memoir, A Man of Two Faces which explores Vietnamese refugeehood, displacement, finding belonging, reclaiming cultural power and celebrating the Vietnamese community. The night is moderated by and in conversation with notable writer Cathy Park Hong, author of Minor Feelings: An Asian American Reckoning. Viet Thanh Nguyen will sign books at this event- be sure to order your copy of A Man of Two Faces through Eastwind Books of Berkeley! ABOUT VIET THANH NGUYEN: Viet Thanh Nguyen was born in Vietnam and raised in America. He's the author of The Sympathizer, which was awarded the 2016 Pulitzer Prize in Fiction, alongside seven other prizes. He is also the author of The Committed, which continues the story of The Sympathizer, a short story collection The Refugees; a nonfiction book Nothing Ever Dies which was a finalist for the National Book Award; and was the editor of an anthology of refugee writing, The Displaced. He is the Aerol Arnold Professor of English and American Studies and Ethnicity at the University of Southern California and a recipient of fellowships from the Guggenheim and MacArthur foundations. He lives in Los Angeles. ABOUT CATHY PARK HONG: Cathy Park Hong’s New York Times bestselling book of creative nonfiction, Minor Feelings: An Asian American Reckoning, was published in Spring 2020 by One World/Random House and Profile Books (UK). Minor Feelings was a Pulitzer Prize finalist, won the National Book Critics Circle Award for autobiography, and earned her recognition on TIME’s 100 Most Influential People of 2021 list. She is also the author of poetry collections Engine Empire, published in 2012 by W.W. Norton, Dance Dance Revolution, chosen by Adrienne Rich for the Barnard Women Poets Prize, and Translating Mo'um. Hong is the recipient of the Windham-Campbell Prize, the Guggenheim Fellowship, and a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship. Her prose and poetry have been published in the New York Times, New Republic, the Guardian, Paris Review, Poetry, and elsewhere. She is a Full Professor in English at UC Berkeley.
