Timed around the Chinese celebrations of the Mid Autumn Festival (marking the importance of the harvest and the moon) the performance builds on traditions of gathering and telling stories about families.
"Voices of mothers and daughters across continents and generations anchor this multimedia performance, featuring new poetry by Lim interwoven with new music and interviews by Chinese diaspora composers Vivian Fung, Meilina Tsui, and Theresa Wong. The Del Sol Quartet centers this collaboration, building on their transformative Angel Island work, with a theatrical visual experience by Olivia Ting and Mark Hellar, and dancer Lynn Huang. "
The words of Genny Lim capture the essence of this performance and show how the stories are universal, relevant today, and bring us all together:
“We are all immigrants
Facing the Moon
Strangers, clasping our children
To our bodies”
“The crucible of change
Lies in the alchemy
of dreams”
The world premiere is also the launch of Genny Lim’s new book "Facing the Moon: Songs of the Diaspora" the poetry that was created for the show. It will be available for purchase at the theatre.
