Made up of FilipinX teachers, musicians and artists who wanted to create a girl and non-binary-centered space to empower young musicians, Sampaguita Rock Camp was founded in the summer of 2022.
Lisa Macapinlac Rockefeller decided to create the camp when her daughter who was just beginning to learn the drums on zoom during the pandemic felt discouraged in a a predominantly male music space. With the partnership and leadership of friends and family, Marian Macapinlac, Les the DJ, Tanya Alota, Rose Lynn Abesamis-Bell and Jackie Marzan, they combined their lifetime experience in music, Girls Rock Inc., graphic arts, and community building to create a one week summer camp culminating in a showcase at the legendary Starry Plough in Berkeley. Artists like Trixamilion, Anne Marie Ceralvo from One Voice, youth poet laureate and drummer Zoe Dorado, Trish Ong and Ruby Ibarra visited the camp each day at lunch. The campers wrote original music which they performed, while also learning how to take band photos, make zines and design their logos. Bay Area Musician Tanya Alota continued the momentum of the Sampaguita Rock Camp by teaching a year-long program for the current East Bay and San Francisco bands.
Sampaguita Rock Camp will be announcing their sophomore summer camp endeavor in the coming weeks for 2023.
