Exhibition 'The Memory Of Our Skin' by Pablo Unzueta

'The Memory of Our Skin' is a long-term photography project by Pablo Unzueta, CatchLight Local Fellow and photojournalist at El Tecolote. The series bridges two distinct communities, the neighborhoods of Santiago, Chile, and a Bay Area peninsula town, Half Moon Bay, by visually exploring their humanistic responses to traumatic events and the shared processes of grief and healing. Initiated in 2017, the project captures the enduring pain and resilience in Chile, still contending with the legacy of the U.S.-backed dictatorship (1973-1990), as well as the struggles of Latino communities in the U.S., marked by gun violence and historical injustices. Unzueta’s work reflects on how collective memories influence our present and future, highlighting the intertwined nature of personal and communal histories and the vital role of remembrance in the healing process. “The Memory Of Our Skin is a reminder that our histories are not only from our past, but they are lived within ourselves. Our memories are an act of remembering, we can find fragments in vigils, protests, community, art, music, gardening, and the creation of memorials that make space to heal.” –Pablo Unzueta Pablo Unzueta is a first-generation Chilean-American documentary photographer born in 1994 in Van Nuys, California. Unzueta is a self-taught photographer documenting the humanities, and the proliferation of inequality in the United States. Unzueta works to tell the stories of underrepresented communities with analog and digital photography and hopes to inspire change through his images and the stories that people share with him. He has been a staff photojournalist at El Tecolote since June 2023, as a CatchLight Local / Report for America Fellow.
