Amanda Greene: Summertime Rolls, Presented by Sarah Shepard Gallery

Amanda Greene Summertime Rolls July 12 - August 6, 2024 Living in a small, rural town near Athens, Georgia, Greene is interested in preserving everyday moments, seasonal shifts and subtle changes that can only be found when one is looking. Places she visits have often gone unchanged for decades. This unique perspective of life off the beaten path helps Amanda’s work tell a story of time and place. Greene describes her work as a broad celebration of color, natural and man made, and its place in the Southern rural landscape and daily life. The sixteen photographs chosen for this exhibition offer a slow look at summer in the South where the air is still and the smell of cut-grass awakens the senses. Moment of connection with people surround the photos mostly devoid of people. Greene tells stories around her images that share experiences like when she had just made a photograph of a clothesline of towels, and a farmstand was set up nearby. After making her photograph, she chatted with the man working the stand and bought a delicious jar of honey. “My grandparents were small-town folks who lived in the mountains of northeastern Georgia. I saw things on car rides with them that sparked my imagination, things like flea markets and fruit stands. Growing up, I was attracted to tacky objects, like the plastic flowers that are sold at flea markets. There is a fading singularity to small-town America that I cherish. Greene studied photography at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA, and lived in Los Angeles for 17 years before returning to Georgia in 2010. Over the past few years, Greene attended two Gee’s Bend Quilting Retreats in Mississippi to learn from members of the Alabama Gee’s Bend quilting community, China and Mary Ann Pettway. Greene included photographic quilts in her solo show Her Fragrance Is Still Among Us at the The Hudgens Center for Art and Learning in Duluth, GA (February 10 - April 20, 2024). Her work has been featured on The New York Times LensBlog, The Bitter Southerner and The Oxford American.
