The Covid-19 pandemic taught us the importance of essential workers. But who were the essential workers of the past? The San Mateo County History Museum will open a new exhibit in its changing exhibit rotunda entitled Essential Workers of the Past, which will explore the stories of the grocery store workers, construction crews and first responders who made life in early San Mateo County possible using photographs taken in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Though much has changed, we still rely on the hard work, dedication and bravery of essential workers each day. Essential Workers of the Past opens on January 16, 2024 and closes on April 21, 2024.
