Hope Lives: Art for ALS Exhibition

Hope Lives: Art for ALS is an annual art exhibition, fundraiser and awareness-building event held each May during ALS Awareness Month in San Francisco, CA. The third annual exhibition opens May 7 through May 31 at the San Francisco Women Artists Gallery. This year’s show is particularly meaningful because all participating artists have ALS. ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, is a neurodegenerative disease that breaks down the communication between a person’s brain and muscles. It steals one’s ability to walk, talk, eat and breathe. ALS is 100% fatal; there are no effective treatments for people facing this disease. But there is hope - the ALS Therapy Development Institute pursues every avenue towards slowing, stopping and ending ALS. All proceeds from Hope Lives: Art for ALS directly fund the research being done at ALS TDI to find effective treatments for ALS. Due to the debilitating symptoms of ALS, participating artists deliver their creative expressions using unexpected techniques. Discover Sandra Murphy-Pak's "inner universe" - paintings that she completes using only her right foot. Embrace color and form in Ken Brenner's artistic collaborations and be amazed by technology assisted artists, Brandy Trigona and Scott Craig, who draw and paint with apps that utilize their mouth and eyes. Events: Everyone is welcome to these FREE events. RSVP on the Hope Lives: Art for ALS website. Opening Reception - May 11th from 2 - 4:30 pm The Opening Reception welcomes artists and art lovers to gather at the Gallery for conversation and creative fun. Join us for delightful music and enjoy light refreshments while discovering your new favorite artists. Wine Tasting & Poetry Event - May 18th from 2 - 4:30 pm Taste wines from Sonoma’s Corner 103 tasting room and alcohol-free, tea based bubblies from TÖST while experiencing beautiful artwork and prose in an intimate setting. Closing Reception May 25th from 2 - 4 pm Learn about how participating artists create their artwork through collaboration, with their feet and technology like EyeGaze. Winners of the Lynn Giovannelli Excellence in Art Awards will be announced. Hope Lives: Art for ALS was launched and is curated by Walnut Creek artist, Melissa Stephens, in 2020 as a way to honor her sister, Lynn Giovannelli. Lynn bravely battled ALS from July 2020 to November 2023. Artwork may be viewed and purchased at the SFWA Gallery and online in their shop (May & June) and the Hope Lives: Art for ALS website (April 20 - June 30.)
