Saturday Cinema: Floral Prints

A whimsical world of flowers is brought to life through the cinematic lens. These short kinetic and meditative animations and documentaries present rural and urban landscapes with vibrant color through the creative style of each filmmaker. In between screenings, get hands on with plants by creating a plant print using screen-printing techniques.

And be sure to check out ¡Plantásticas!: Our Lives with Plants, a new exhibition celebrating the history and science of plants and their integral role in connecting us to our cultures and our planet.

Dahlia by Michael Langan (2008, 3 min.)
This dynamic moving portrait of San Francisco uses various cinematic techniques to showcase an array of flowers set amidst the concrete nature of the city. Edited to a score of vocal percussion, Dahlia juxtaposes the more stable architectural forms with the frenetic behavior of humanity. Check out Golden Gate Park’s Dahlia Garden which reaches peak bloom in August and September.

Story of Flowers by Azuma Makoto (2017, 4 min.)
A luminous array of flowers exquisitely rendered in a variety of colors. These animated plants take root in the earth, sprouting and blooming; are pollinated by birds and insects; and live on in spite of rain, wind, and storms. They pass on the baton of life in a continuous cycle of decay and rebirth.

Con Brio by Sandra Eber (2013, 4 min.)
This choreographed stop-motion pinhole animation features dancing flowers saturated with color. Accompanied by a playful ukulele tune, this shimmering backyard garden comes to life!

Summer Light for Tula by Sylvia Turchin (2020, 9 min.)
This lovely evocation of an East Bay garden is a symphony of sorts, a tribute to light and beauty, and an effort to reconcile with death. An invitation to take time out to meditate on the lushness of nature in the midst of an urban environment.
