Author Laurence Ralph Presents His New Nonfiction Book "Sito"

Join us at Mrs. Dalloway's Bookstore on Thursday, March 14th at 7:00 PM when author LAURENCE RALPH will read from, discuss, and sign copies of his new book "SITO: An American Teenager and the City That Failed Him". Laurence will be joined in discussion by FORREST STUART. The book is a riveting and heart-wrenching story of violence, grief and the American justice system, exploring the systemic issues that perpetuate gang participation in one of the wealthiest cities in the country, through the story of one teenager. Written from Ralph's perspective as both a person enmeshed in Sito's family and as an Ivy League professor and expert on the entanglement of class and violence, "SITO" is an intimate story with an message about the lived experience of urban danger, and about anger, fear, grief, vengeance, and ultimately grace. LAURENCE RALPH is a professor, writer and filmmaker. His first book, "Renegade Dreams", received the C. Wright Mills Award and the J.I. Staley Prize. His second book and award-winning animated short film, "The Torture Letters", explores a decades-long scandal in which hundreds of Black men were tortured in police custody. Laurence’s written work has been published in numerous periodicals, including The Paris Review, The New York Times, and The Nation. Ralph is currently a professor of anthropology at Princeton University. He lives in Princeton, New Jersey, with his family. FORREST STUART is a Professor of Sociology at Stanford University, where he also directs the Stanford Ethnography Lab and the Program on Urban Studies. A 2020 MacArthur Fellow, his research examines the causes, contours, and consequences of urban poverty. He is the author of "Down, Out and Under Arrest: Policing and Everyday Life in Skid Row" and "Ballad of the Bullet: Gangs, Drill Music, and the Power of Online Infamy".
