WriteNow SF Bay is hosting a Creative Writing Workshop with Grace Morizawa, Kimi Sugioka and Shizue Seigel. WriteNow supports BIPOCs (Black, Brown Indigenous and People of Color) and allies in finding their voice, telling their stories and expressing themselves through creative writing and art. No writing experience necessary. San Francisco Japantown is a mecca for Asian American food and culture and food has profoundly impacted Asian American history over time. Who grows our food? Who prepares it, who delivers it? Who profits from it? How do you support the local food economy?Do you eat for nourishment or distraction, comfort or connection? What are your comfort foods and why? What else besides food nourishes your soul? 3pm: Readings of prose and poetry by Grace Morizawa, Kimi Sugioka, and Shizue, followed by writing prompts and optional shares and/or open mic if there’s time. 4pm (optional): Support Japantown by adjourning to a local restaurant to continue the conversation. Grace Morizawa is the Education Coordinator for the National Japanese American Historical Society (NJAHS). Previously, she was an elementary school teacher in Oakland and Lake Elementary School principal in San Pablo, CA. Morizawa is a Sansei, third-generation Japanese American originally from Ontario, Oregon, which was outside the exclusion zone. Her parents were incarcerated in Heart Mountain. She is a teacher consultant with the Bay Area Writing Project. She has a BA in English from Pacific University, an MA in Creative Writing from San Francisco State, and a doctorate from the Leadership in Education and Equity Program at UC Berkeley. Kimi Sugioka is a mother, educator, songwriter and poet. She earned an MFA from Naropa University and has published two books of poetry; the newest of which is Wile & Wing on Manic D Press. She has been published in numerous anthologies and is the poet laureate of Alameda, California. As an active board member for literary arts organizations, she curates and hosts readings in Alameda and San Francisco. She believes that creating community through art is a revolutionary act. Shizue Seigel, founder/director of Write Now! SF Bay, supports writers and artists of color through workshops, events and anthologies. Her eight books include five anthologies of Bay Area writers and artists of color. She’s a third-generation Japanese American who earned her first dollar sharecropping strawberries. She grew up on Maryland crab, Tokyo food carts, and Indian curries. She loves food and thinks of neighborhood restaurants and farmers markets as family. More info at writenowsf.com or email [email protected].
