Carrion Blooms: A Solo Exhibition by Casey Curran

Heron Arts is pleased to announce the solo exhibition Carrion Blooms from Seattle-based artist Casey Curran. Casey Curran’s artwork is a mix of past and present, combining modern laser cut precision with medieval kinetic techniques. This series of work focuses on the intimate connection between the degeneration of the body and memory. The opening reception for Carrion Blooms is Saturday, April 1st, 2023 from 6-9pm. It is free and open to the public. The exhibition will be on view to the public until May 6th by appointment only. Carrion Blooms is about how we change over time, how we use our days differently with age, and what it means to let go of the past. What pieces of ourselves do we leave behind or choose to take with us when we can no longer spread ourselves thinner? What will be left when we are gone, and who will remember the arrangement we made? Even after death, we make a lasting mark. With deeds sown into the earth, claiming the ground with a whisper, “Here we are now, and there I was then.” They are small shadows coloring the lives we touch, and so on, and so on. This is Casey Curran’s second solo exhibition at Heron Arts. Casey received his BFA in painting and sculpture from Cornish College of the Arts in 2006. He has completed several large-scale public works in partnership with Skanska Architects, MadArt, Facebook, Oculus Rift, and Security Properties. In 2022 Curran’s Daphne sculpture served as the backdrop to Iris van Herpen’s Paris Fashion Week Runway show. In 2010 and 2013, Curran was awarded the NY Sculpture Space residency twice, and has received multiple awards in artistic merit since. In 2008, Curran become a key collaborator in the internationally recognized performance art group Saint Genet developing large-scale interactive sets, which have been exhibited at The Guggenheim Museum in NY, The Kunsthalle Museum in Krems, Austria, Luminato Festival in Toronto, Canada, and Frye Art Museum in Seattle, WA. ARTIST STATEMENT I find myself drawn to the foundation of things, to the root of their cause and the long cycle of their existence. It’s a fascination with structures laying between the very vast and the very small. A desire to see a system writ into the nature of things, defining every surface, every thought and idea. A simple piece of humanity laying somewhere between stars and bones, summoning the great and small triumphs of our innumerable endeavors. Focusing primarily in sculpture, but not limited to any specific medium, I create kinetic environments with an internal logic and history often propelled by a simple hand crank. I invite the viewer to become a part of the work through participation, animating a tableau of flora and fauna that bloom or flutter to life when activated. When conceiving my pieces I center on a hidden narrative and assign visual elements that aline with the concept of the piece, often utilizing ornate structures and simple construction methods to further highlight my interests in Nature, foundation and form. When creating my work I look for patterns in the environments around me, trying to tease out symmetry in their ecosystems. I look for how innovation shapes itself into our ever expanding systems of complexity and knowledge. I create work that attempts to straddle the concepts of chaos, pattern, and emergence. These are the pillars I search for, the thoughtful hands that hold my metaphors.
