The Art of Coding by Whistling, Prayer or Observing Clouds

Inspired by instruction-based art of the 1960s, Daniel Temkin introduces a poetic lens on computer programming that whimsically opens up ideas on how humans interact with computers -- a timely exercise in an era of expanding AI. He's sharing projects from his new book "Forty-Four Esolangs: The Art of Esoteric Code" (published September 23 by MIT Press), in which he explores code as prayer, whistling, music, and typing in tandem by two people at once, to name a few examples. He draws on 20 years of making and writing about esoteric languages, including at the blog esoteric.codes, where he's interviewed dozens of esolangers, digital artists and digital poets. He recently presented on vibe coding esolangs at Rhizome's Vibe Shift conference in conjunction with Anthropic. He currently has work on view at the Museum of the Moving Image and Higher Pictures gallery in New York. He holds an MFA from Bard/ICP.
