Unfiltered: Conversations About Wine

'Unfiltered: Conversations About Wine' is a unique event for uncertain times. Some of the most skilled and inspiring winemakers in our region are pouring and discussing their craft while leading climate adaptation scientists who study implications for local viticulture discuss their findings (Drs. Whendee Silver, Tibisay Perez and Kaan Kurtural). Right next to people like Matt Niess, who is redefining the meaning of terroir and actually practicing sustainable winemaking using climate-resilient native varietals. We'll have Jared Brandt and Clark Smith debating the benefits and risks of natural winemaking while winemakers and soil biologists discuss terroir. ‘Unfiltered' is not just about wine. It’s about coming together. Because we think we all need that more than ever. We’ll also be talking about hard truths with winemakers who are dealing with uncomfortable situations in creative ways. And it is also about wine. It's about really, really good wine, made by extraordinary people. It's about how their wines reflect their personality, skill and unique perspectives. It's about the story of who they are to us and how we see their lives, attitudes and creative visions manifest in their wine--because we think that's actually what makes their wines exceptional. Unfiltered is also about science. We have some of the leading climate adaptation scientists in the world talking about the impacts of climate change on natural wine in our region while soil biologists discuss how microbiomes manifest in wine. And it's also about art, and how the music winemakers listen to while pressing influences the final outcome. Every winemaker pouring at this event is diving head-first into the viticultural mosh pit. They're all 100% committed to shepherding grapes into your mouth with the lightest touch imaginable--and that's hard. Very, very hard. We want to celebrate that and create an opportunity to both taste a broad range while getting to know a slightly different side of the winemaker--and the person next to you. We'll have three formal conversations happening during the event: A conversation with Dr. Kaan Kurtural, former head of UCD's experimental Oakville vineyard, and visiting scholar, Dr. Tibisay Perez with UCB's Department of Environmental Science, Policy and Management, will discuss the implications of adaptation on viticulture in our region, with a particular focus on how sustainable and natural winemaking practices are increasingly in conflict. A conversation with Jared Brandt about how poorly made wine flowing under the moniker of 'natural' wine is damaging the category. A conversation with winemakers and soil biologists about the science and art of terroir, how to taste it and why it matters. Participating winemakers include: Adam Saake, Anthony Beckman, Bertus van Zyl, Bibi Adams, Blair Guthrie, Chris Walsh, Connor Brockman, Darek Trowbridge, Don Henderson, Emily Fernwood, Jake Des Voignes, James Jelks, Dr. Kaan Kurtural, Kristie Tacey, Matt Niess, Megan Hughes, Monica and Beno Steward, Nat Wong, Pax Mahle, Sam Bilbro, Tom Sherwood and William Allen.
