ENCOUNTER: a dance theater by Sindhoor Natya - Navarasa

Acclaimed dance theater company Sindhoor Natya brings its internationally celebrated ENCOUNTER to San Francisco with three performances at Dance Mission Theater from Friday, September 25 through Sunday, September 27, 2026. Created by renowned artists Aparna Sindhoor, Anil Natyaveda, and writer S.M. Raju, ENCOUNTER is a provocative work with daring physical theater and powerful storytelling. Inspired by Magsaysay Award-winner Mahasweta Devi's story, the production follows the journey of Dopdi, an indigenous woman whose resistance against injustice becomes a compelling testament to courage, resilience, and human dignity. Choreographed and directed by Aparna Sindhoor and Anil Natyaveda, with a script by S.M. Raju and Aparna Sindhoor, ENCOUNTER features an evocative original score by National Award-winning composer Isaac Thomas Kottukapally. The production presents contemporary choreography, drawing from Bharatanatyam and Kalarippayattu Indian martial arts, along with aerial acrobatics on a 13ft pole and live singing to deliver a visually stunning and emotionally charged performance. Sindhoor Natya Center for the Arts (San Jose and Los Angeles) is the primary institution for Mysore Style Bharatanatyam and Kalari Indian martial arts in North America.
