The San Mateo County Historical Association will honor recently retired Congresswoman Anna Eshoo as its 2025 San Mateo County History Maker. The dinner event will take place at the Crown Plaza Hotel in Foster City on September 25.
The Historical Association has been giving this annual award since 2003. It is meant to recognize an individual or individuals who have made an important historical impact on San Mateo County and whose actions have also significantly affected development outside of the County. This history-making might have importance in people’s lives economically, socially, or politically. It may inspire lifestyle, educational, environmental or spiritual change.
For more than three decades, Congresswoman Anna Eshoo has been a force for progress and a champion of innovation. Representing California’s 16th District from 1993 to 2025, her Silicon Valley roots shaped a legislative career that blended cutting-edge policy with bipartisan collaboration.
Eshoo authored 68 bills signed into law by five Presidents, even while spending most of her career in the minority. A longtime member of the Energy and Commerce Committee, she broke barriers as the first woman to lead both the Health Subcommittee and the Communications and Technology Subcommittee.
Her legacy includes the creation of two federal research agencies advancing medical cures and biosafety, expanded health insurance coverage for breast reconstructive surgery, and securing U.S. recognition of the Armenian genocide. She played a pivotal role in landmark legislation such as the Telecommunications Act, the Affordable Care Act, and the Violence Against Women Act.
Named one of Silicon Valley’s most powerful women by the Mercury News and one of TIME’s 100 most influential people in AI, Eshoo has left an indelible mark on healthcare, technology, and human rights. Before her time in Congress, she served a decade on the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors, where her commitment to public service first took root.
Her career is a testament to perseverance, vision, and the power of leadership to create lasting change.
