The New Deal and American Art: Federal Funding and Cultural Democracy During the Great Depression
Ninety years ago, during an era of profound economic and environmental crisis, the US federal government was the major patron of American art. This talk looks at how and why various federal agencies shaped and directed America's New Deal art projects during the Great Depression, forging a democratic public culture, an "art for the millions." Focusing on the stylistic range and accessibility of New Deal art, it further considers the New Deal's commitment to modern American art and artists, its political and social conflicts, and its legacy.
