Julien Poirier + Tongo Eisen-Martin = Mansions My Mouth Made


Julien Poirier is a poet from Berkeley who teaches at San Quentin State Prison. Poirier has published numerous poetry books including El Golpe Chileño (Ugly Duckling, 2010), Stained Glass Windows of California (Ugly Duckling, 2012), Way Too West (Bootstrap, 2015) and Out of Print (City Lights). A founding member of the Brooklyn-based press Ugly Duckling, he is also editor of books of writings by Jack Micheline, Bill Berkson and Frank Lima (with Garrett Caples). Tongo Eisen-Martin is a poet, movement worker, and educator. His curriculum on extrajudicial killing of Black people, We Charge Genocide Again, has been used as an educational and organizing tool throughout the country. His book Someone's Dead Already was nominated for a California Book Award. His book Heaven Is All Goodbyes, published by the City Lights Pocket Poets series, was shortlisted for the Griffins Poetry Prize and won a California Book Award and an American Book Award. His latest book Blood On The Fog was named one of the New York Times poetry books of the year. In 2020, he co-founded Black Freighter Press to publish revolutionary works. He was the eighth poet laureate of San Francisco, the city where he was born and raised.
