Plastics proliferation - Impacts of plastics pollution on human & animal health and biodiversity
As the world keep adding ca 400 million tons/year of net-new plastics, and since recycling, after decades of promotion, remains marginal (less than 10% of plastics production, we are discovering more impacts of plastics pollution (macroplastics, microplastics and nanoplastics) on human health and biodiversity.
Every month, new medical studies are published showing a link between diseases and presence of microplastics in the human body. With decades of accumulation of plastics behind and in front of us, presence of microplastics is only meant to increase, increasingly affecting human health, and animal health.
Realizing that it has become critical to monitor impacts of plastics on human and animal health (food chain!), the March 30 conference offers a reality-check of where medical and scientific knowledge stands today on this topic.
Open to the general public, the conference features 4 very-qualified panel speakers:
- Dr Desiree Labeaud , MD and Professor at Stanford University's School of Medicine, will address known impacts of macroplastics, microplasticsand nanoplastics on human health. Dr LaBeaud Serves as Associate Dean of Global Health at Stanford and co-leads the Stanford Center for Human Planetary Health Plastics and Health working group.
- Dr Pádraig Duignan, DVM, and Dr Cara Field, DVM, Directors at the Marine Mammal Center (Sausalito) will present the Center's unique and in-depth experience of plastics impacts (macroplastics, microplastics) on animal health.
- Fabien Lamaison, Executive Director of Plastic Odyssey Fund, will speak about plastcis pollution impacts on biodiversity. Plastic Odyssey has been awarded contracts by Unesco to clean up some of 50 endangered sites across the world - located mostly in the middle of oceans where currents accumulate plastic waste.
Initial presentations by the speakers will be followed by a Q&A session and spare time will be offered for networking. Admission is free for University students and staff. General admission is $15.
