More than 120 young artists submitted their artwork for Youth in Arts’ annual RISING STARS. The show, in its 32nd year, features the best high school artists from public, private and alternative schools across Marin County.
The showcase runs February 11 through April 14. It features drawings, paintings, photographs, prints, sculptures, mixed media, and digital artwork from emerging youth artists. The art is on display at the YIA Gallery at 917 C St. in the Downtown San Rafael Arts District, weekdays from 11 am to 4 pm. Admission is free.
Visual art teachers from 13 Marin County high schools nominated their top students for the juried show. Winners will be announced on Saturday, February 11, at an artists’ award reception from 2 to 4 pm at the YIA Gallery.
“The work never ceases to amaze,” said YIA Director of External Affairs and show curator Morgan Schauffler. “It is always incredible to see what Marin’s thoughtful and innovative high school students put forth for the show. We love having an opportunity to share their unique, creative voices with our community.”
The exhibition will be blindly adjudicated. This year’s judges include renowned gallery owner, Sarah Shepard, interdisciplinary artist Naomi Tamura, and Marin Open Studios artist, Kay Carlson. Sponsors include College of Marin, Dominican University of California, RileyStreet Art Supply, Marin Open Studios, and Naomi Tamura & Ali Rezaian.
Participants include Archie Williams, High School, Compass Academy, Marin Academy, Marin Catholic High School, Marin School of the Arts, Novato High School, Redwood High School, San Domenico School, San Rafael High School, Tamalpais High School, Tamiscal High School, Terra Linda High School, The Branson School, and Tomales High School.
Artist Susan Diglioni founded RISING STARS in 1991, believing that young artists should be recognized for their talents. The show has been championed and perpetuated by long-time board member, Sheila Tuffanelli since she brought it to Youth in Arts in 2011.
