Updated from the original 1914 text, and now featuring an all-female cast, this macabre parody tackles the cycle of birth and death with tenderness not seen since the Valley of Heart’s Delight became Silicon. Modernist Eugene O’Neill, the only playwright to receive the Nobel Peace Prize in Literature, is considered to be the patriarch of serious American drama. Compared to his later plays, this seafaring disaster tale foreshadows the themes of loss and injustice that would populate O’Neill’s famous period. Neither success nor failure, comedy nor tragedy, can hide in the fog forever ROMANCE AT ARMAGEDDON | Dorothy Parker This dark comedy follows the hopelessly romantic Babylon in a battle of the sexes for the millennium. Like reading an advice column blitzed on three tabs of acid, Babylon’s odyssey unfolds as she endures the apocalyptic feelings surrounding courtship and marriage, all while ignoring the very real doomsday hanging above her head. The play’s dialogue is adapted from three short stories by the razor-tongued Dorothy Parker, forerunner to Helen Gurley Brown and Candace Bushnell. Parker was a literati icon and founder of the Algonquin Round Table, a 1920s social club which had only the best writers of the New Yorker as its members. Scholars often say American history repeats itself every 100 years. So we’re bound to glean something revelatory from this Jazz Age satirist’s commentary on calamities great and small.
