Art Exhibiton - David Maxim: Abstraction and Other Matters

A journey in art making that has spanned decades, Maxim’s engaging and insightful work is a reminder that art and the artist’s interpretation of the world is needed now more than ever. "This Way Not That Way," 2020, a small sculpture included in the exhibition, portrays a playful interaction of a lumbering giant-like figure carrying a smaller figure on his shoulders. The smaller figure gestures with youthful enthusiasm, pointing to a better way ahead, as revealed in the title. The two rely on one another, not able to find their way alone. Imagery of animals, and landscape scenes depicting harsh weather, are a recent addition to the artist’s vocabulary. The emphasis on process continues in small abstract paintings that become interactive with the added element of hovering, mutable, grid-like forms that can be adjusted creating a new abstract composition. Additionally, abstract dimensional canvases created with the use of strings as painting implements, resulting in a gestural quality brings to mind action painting of the 1950’s and 1960’s A native of Southern California with a Master's Degree from UCLA, David Maxim relocated to San Francisco in 1976. His work has been exhibited in museums and universities throughout the U.S. and internationally.
